RAG is a real improvement over context-free generation. But it solves the problem at the wrong layer.
RAG asks: "Which documents should the AI read before answering?"
The better question is: "What does the AI need to understand — about you, your goals, your values, your constraints, your projects — before it even encounters the question?"
RAG is retrieval. Cognitive architecture is comprehension.

Generic. Forgettable. Indistinguishable from ten thousand other AI-generated posts.

Not all context is equal. Through building my system, I've identified three distinct layers that each produce different types of leverage:
Layer 1: Identity Context
Who you are. What you do. Your role, your experience, your personality, your neurodivergent constraints, your communication style. This layer ensures the AI's output sounds like you, not like a language model.
This is the layer most people skip. They jump straight to project context ("here's my task") without ever establishing identity context ("here's who I am"). The result: technically correct output that sounds like it was written by a machine. Because it was. Without identity context, you're getting the model's default voice, not yours.
Layer 2: Operational Context
What you're working on. Your current projects, priorities, deadlines, constraints, 90-day goals. This layer ensures the AI's output is relevant to your actual work, not generic advice.
Operational context is where most AI assistants try to start. "What are you working on?" But without Layer 1, operational context is shallow. The AI knows your task but not your standards, your values, or your patterns.
Layer 3: Relational Context
How things connect to each other. Which project feeds which goal. Which agent hands off to which other agent. What you decided last session that affects today. This is the layer that produces genuine insight — the AI sees patterns across your work that you might miss.
Relational context is the hardest to build and the most valuable once established. It's what turns an AI from a tool that does what you ask into a partner that sees what you don't.

AI makes content production easier. That's exactly why content becomes less valuable — when supply is infinite, individual pieces lose differentiation.
