These four layers — Know, Enforce, Evolve, Direct — trace back to decades of systems thinking. IBM called it “autonomic computing” in 2001. Biologists Maturana and Varela described “autopoietic” systems in 1972. The SEI’s CMMI model defines five capability maturity levels. The principles aren’t new.
